i hate my camera with the strength of 10 tigers

me and the boys on the floaty my girl sent
jumping off the circus tent pole

if you look close you can almost make out the diving board
my rig...there's a satellite dish back there...
the crappiest photos yet...my camera does not do well in sun light...or in darkness...it can not handle outside pictures...or even inside...i think the heat screws it up too...and i haven't been able to test it in cold yet...when i leave i will destroy the camera with a sledge hammer...enjoy

I think you should first dip it in liquid Nitrogen and then hit it with a sledge hammer. That way. It will shatter in teeny tiny pieces and make a huge bang Thu 7-Aug-2003 16:47

it's ok, backlighting screws up a picture no matter the camera. when indoors the light has to come from behind or the side, and when outdoors even most good cameras won't pick up something that's in the shade. just the way it goes... Thu 7-Aug-2003 17:29

Thanks so much for the pictures. I used to live in the Middle East & love it very much. I want to see & hear from the people who are experiencing it without spin. Be safe, be human....you are in such difficult circumstances. Everybody is so young it seems. Sending positive energy (some people say prayers) your way. Thanks again. Fri 8-Aug-2003 00:32

m.j. is right -- strong backlighting is something that confuses the heck out of most cameras. If your camera has a flash on it, using the flash in a situation like this might help. Otherwise, placing yourself with the sun behind you will help eliminate problems with backlight.

I'm glad that Salam has found your blog. I saw his post before I saw yours. I hope you guys get to shake hands face-to-face. If that doesn't happen, the fact that you've virtually shaken hands via blog posts is a Good Thing.

Take care of yourself and stay safe!

Don't rip yourself up about the camera. Yeah, the image quality sucks, but the images you're getting are very cool. I really like the look of the one with the diving board (or lack thereof). And the one of the satellite rig has a cool look to it, too. It's got a real gritty digital "verite" sort of look that makes crappy snapshots, but, well, good art. Work with it! Fri 8-Aug-2003 14:50

That tent is an impossible shot photograph-wise - no camera on Earth could balance the wicked midday sun outside with the shadowy interior. In general, midday photography in cloudless climates is a recipe for grief. Before you tape your camera to a JDAM reward yourself with some 'magic hour' shooting. Take a few rolls during the hour when the sun is just coming up or going down and I bet you will be very happy.

On the other hand, if those shots are from a digital camera then don't be afraid to run it over with your truck and put it out of its misery.

Most of all, come home safe.

Although I have air, living in the Az. desert I can understand your pain. I found your blog through Salem Pax and feel you both serve a vital role in reporting the real deal. Lord knows Fox News(?) sucks! While I m no fan of the current administration, I feel good to know there are Americans as yourself doing the job you have been asked to do with honor. You make us all proud. Be safe and get home to your lady. Fri 8-Aug-2003 19:08

Just know that we all appreciate everything you send out.Sorry to see your comment line go down, but I understand about the content you were getting.About the Samoan GI you mentioned,is it possible to get an address so people could send him packages for the Iraqis?I would lov to do this and I have tons of customers who would lov it also.

Best thing happened today is Salam Pax sending me to your blog. Thanks so much for writing. With on-scene reality from you and the US military side, and Salam Pax porting from the Iraqi civilian side, there's hope for Truth beyond Faux News.

Tell us as much as you safely can about your job.

Those mushroom clouds come from blowing things up inside something tubular like an oil barrel or a piece of conduit or something. My dad used to entertain the neighbors that way. Thu 21-Aug-2003 20:49

Actually, you don't need to blow things up in a tube to get a mushroom-shaped cloud ... if you have a big enough explosion, air pressure alone causes that effect. You use tubes to GET that effect for a crowd-pleasing cloud WITHOUT needing to use thousands of pounds of explosives. We see a lot of mushroom type clouds when EOD works their magic, just because ... they're blowing a lot of shit up in each shot. Thu 23-Oct-2003 19:53

I am honestly not sure if it is solely air pressure or that and the reflection of the ground-wave that focuses the explosion effects upward like that, but it sure as hell does not need any tube to produce. Thu 23-Oct-2003 19:55
